Many people agree that it’s time to be more thoughtful about how our actions affect the natural world. For a long time, society operated on a “use it and throw it away” mindset. While that attitude hasn’t disappeared entirely, there has been a noticeable shift toward reconsidering how much we consume and discard.

Even routine purchases can have environmental implications.

Take something as ordinary as a toothbrush. Most are made of plastic, typically polyethylene, which is not biodegradable and requires natural resources to produce. Alternatives made from materials like bamboo are biodegradable and sourced from a rapidly renewable plant. Although plastic toothbrushes can sometimes be recycled, they often are not.

But their environmental impact has led many governments to reconsider their use. Several states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, have enacted statewide restrictions or bans. California was the first to do so in 2016, and many cities and counties in other states have adopted similar rules.
